Sewing Tutorial: Georgia Faux Wrap Shorts

The Georgia Faux Wrap Shorts are high waisted, short, fitted on the hips, and loose on the thighs. The top edge is finished with a self-fabric facing. The faux wraps are bagged out and inserted into the side seam. The closure is an invisible CB zipper.
Great for an intermediate sewer or confident beginner if you can tackle an invisible zipper.

To begin you will need the following things

Materials

  • Georgia Faux Wrap Shorts paper pattern
  • 1.5m fabric
  • 0.4m lining
  • 18cm Invisible zipper
  • cotton thread (enough to also thread your overlocker)

Tools

  • scissors
  • pins
  • sewing machine
  • overlocker
  • iron

Tips

  • Ensure your fabric is washed, dried and pressed before you start cutting. For instance, there is nothing worse than washing your beautiful garment and it shrinks, or even more annoying the lining shrinks and the main doesn’t so its all pulled out and shape and is unwearable.

Step 1

Cut all main and lining pieces accurately on the correct grain, ensuring all notches are clipped.

Beginner tip* If you can afford to purchase a rotary cutter and cutting mat, I find this more accurate and time-efficient.

Step 2

Overlock front and back rise edges (separately) from the right side, at the same time overlock side seams of facing (separately).

Step 3

Sew back waist darts.

Beginner tip* If needed you can draw the dart lines onto the fabric with dressmaker’s chalk to ensure you sew a neat straight dart.

Step 4

Then join side seams of facing together, press open, overlock bottom edge and set aside.

Beginner tip* Do not skip pressing, pressing ensures your garment gives a neat professional finish to your garment and will ensure it sits nice and flat on the body.

Step 5

Sew hem edges of peplums (faux wrap pieces) together, turn and press then set aside.

Also ensure you clip your corners or it will look bulky and messy when the garment is turned through.

Step 6

Insert invisible zipper into CB of shorts (you can do this after step 7 but I find it easier to handle this way)

If you need extra help sewing the invisible zipper, there is a more in-depth tutorial here.

Step 7

Join inseam of front and back shorts, overlock closed and press back.

Step 8

Then sew front and back rise closed from the center front waist up to the bottom of the zipper.

Step 9

Next take the peplums and attach to front side seam using a long stitch and 6mm seam allowance,
then sew front and back side seams together using a standard stitch length and 1cm seam allowance.
(This can be completed in one step if you are a more advanced sewer)

Step 10

Repeat the same along the waist edge attaching the peplums to the front waist to hold in place.

Step 11

Pin and sew the facing to the top edge of the skirt, then sew facing edges to the zipper. Clip the
corners, turn through, pinstitch and press.
12.

Step 12

Next fold and stitch hem. (You will need to start and finish at the side seam moving the peplums out of the way as you start and finish)
